Job Description:
Title: Lab Assistant - Biological Sciences Location:Newark, DEDuration: ContractSchedule: M-F Day Hours Target Start Date: ASAPResponsibilities: Routine lab housekeeping tasks: Wipe down lab benches and other general use surfaces, such as sink areas and fume hoods, when not in use.Gather used items such as glassware, plasticware, and laboratory tools from lab spaces, prepare, clean and/or autoclave, and return to lab or other location as directed.Flush eyewashes in labs and lab spaces.Prepare standard buffers according to recipes and instructions given; activity involves accurate dry and liquid measurements of chemicals, transfer of chemicals, and proper storage of chemicals. Laboratory stocks: Pick up and deliver basic supplies such as gloves, Kimwipes, pipet tip racks from stockroom/warehouse area located within building to individual labs and/or people in labs.Check first aid and spill kits in labs and lab spaces, and request refills if/when needed.Refill disinfectant spray bottles. Lab waste management: Lab trash - check containers for fullness, prepare final packaging for disposal, and transport sealed waste to waste accumulation area; replace with new container and label.Chemical waste - check containers for fullness, prepare container and waste label, and transport closed waste container to waste accumulation area; replace with new container and label. Gather EHS emptied, returned containers for storage.Biological waste - check containers for fullness, autoclave and let cool, if needed, prepare container for EHS pickup, transport sealed waste container to pick-up location.Replace with new container in lab.Maintain other waste streams such as sharps containers, broken glass boxes, benchtop containers.Maintain stock of lab waste management materials. Lab equipment preparation and maintenance: Biological safety cabinets - wipe down deck with disinfectant, turn UV lamp on/off, refill supplies, replace UV lamps, and perform thorough cleaning within cabinet and/or below deck.Cell culture incubators - refill humidity pans/bottles, replace filters, perform sterilization.Water baths - refill water to maintain level, clean.Cold storage -defrost and cleanout, maintain electronic inventory sheet.Cryo dewars - refill LN2 as needed; maintain log sheet.pH meters - calibrate, refill fluids, empty waste, and prepare for use.Other/general - wipe down outer surfaces, empty various equipment waste containers, refill fluids/reagents, replenish equipment-specific consumables, maintain any log sheets, monitor metrics when applicable. General: Pickup, label as directed, and distribute packages delivered to building loading area.Maintain chemical inventory, SDSs, and SOPs in ChemInventory and/or LIMS system as directed.Perform inventory checks on supplies, chemicals, samples, and other as directed.Attend lab meetings, if directed.Assist in moving/rearranging supplies, and moveable lab casework/equipment (such as benches on wheels, freezers on wheels, balance, pH meter, etc.) between spaces. Perform other miscellaneous minor tasks as directed. Requirements: AS/BS Degree related science w/ some lab experienceExperience/familiarity w/ pH meter (calibration- general), autoclaves, centrifuges; will provide trainingLift Up to 50 lbs (floor to waist)
