Job Description:
Prepare samples and perform testing per prescribed test methods

Actively participate in composite sample preparation, including resin mixing, molding, layup, cure, and testing. Utilize various instruments, equipment, and tools including mixers, sonicators, ovens, environmental chambers and analytical test equipment including; viscometer, mass balance scales, and micrometers. Participate in machining, measurement, testing, and data acquisition & recording of samples, according to ASTM Standards. Tests include, but are not limited to:
  • Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA);
  • Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA);
  • ASTM C365 flatwise compressive properties;
  • ASTM D1781 climbing drum peel;
  • ASTM D2344 short-beam strength;
  • General tensile, compression, fatigue, impact and hardness testing.
Maintain test equipment calibration. Record, evaluate, and report test results on forms and in electronic spreadsheets. Maintain test sample storage area and electronic and hardcopy filing of test results.

Must have knowledge of safe lab procedures. Be capable of learning mixing procedures and formulation techniques, creating and revising work instructions and recipes

Regular contact with Quality Manager and Engineers. Workload is scheduled in conjunction with Quality Manager and Engineers who prioritize work. Quality of work is evaluated by Quality Manager and Engineers.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Working Condition
Requires high degree of cooperation with Engineers. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with colleagues in a team environment. Hands-on work, involving resin mixing (including epoxy, polyester and vinylester resins, adhesives, coatings, solvents), composite layup, and operation and maintenance of testing equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma required. Two-year Associates degree with technical focus in areas of science or engineering is desired.
Minimum 5 years experience in mechanical testing or machining.

Knowledge of analytical testing of resin systems and composite materials, ability to read and interpret specifications, review test plans, procedures, data analysis and follow detailed verbal and written instructions and have a good understanding of manufacturing, quality and testing standards (ISO/AS/ASTM).
Must have good organizational skills, high degree of accuracy in testing and completing paperwork, strong math skills, and legible handwriting. Good familiarity with PC environment and accuracy in entering information into databases and spreadsheets.
