Job Description:
Form Energy is a team of passionate people tackling the challenge of climate change through transformationally low cost energy storage.  Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence and creativity. The company is backed by a diverse set of committed investors and we have raised over $100M to date.
Role Description We are looking for a Senior Materials Scientist to drive the development of one of the critical components of Form Energy’s long-duration energy storage system. This role will focus on closing performance gaps related to the component through hypothesis-driven testing, systematic root cause analyses, and creative mitigation strategy development. The Senior Materials Scientist will work closely with chemical, materials, and mechanical engineers on the technology development team. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in developing a mechanistic understanding of process-property-performance relationships and a passion for hands-on work to drive to significant milestones on aggressive timelines.

What you'll do:

    • Advance the development of Form Energy’s component materials toward high performance for a novel long-duration energy storage system
    • Drive the formulation, prioritization, and testing of hypotheses and mitigation strategies to improve component performance, informed by historical internal data, literature, and previous experience
    • Work with materials engineers, chemical engineers, electrochemists, and a team of technicians to design experiments, execute experiments and analyze data using custom electrochemical test stands and a suite of materials characterization methods
    • Develop a deep understanding of process-property-performance relationships in our material system leveraging external manufacturing partners, internal testing resources, and external analytical laboratories
    • Develop new electrochemical testing and materials characterization pipelines as necessary to accelerate cycles of learning toward mitigating component underperformance
    • Propose new directions for component development while considering potential trade-offs with other key components of the energy storage system

What you'll need:

    • MS + 5-7 years industrial experience or PhD + 1-2 years industrial experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
    • Strong experience with solid-state materials characterization techniques such as SEM, BET, pycnometry, optical microscopy, Hg-intrusion porosimetry, and XRD
    • Deep expertise in developing a mechanistic understanding of process-property-performance relationships for the purpose of engineering material systems
    • Working knowledge of electrochemistry preferred
