Job Description:

Independently performs a variety of diagnostic laboratorytests in the Clinical Laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis andtreatment of disease.  Uses knowledge andskill set to oversee laboratory functions, including quality control,maintenance, training and other required tasks. Performs venipunctures and capillary draws on Inpatients, Emergency Roompatients, and Outpatients as needed.

Responsibilities: Alisting of the key responsibilities:

  1. Demonstratesthe knowledge, skills and ability to perform a variety of laboratory tests in atimely manner yielding accurate and precise results with a low error rate.  Assists Medical director and Lab manager /supervisor in test selection and implementation.
  2. Abilityto appropriately troubleshoot and take remedial actions to resolve issues andproblems independently.  Ensures thatpatient results are not reported until systems are functioning properly.  Clearly communicates resolutions or nextsteps to the section/lab leadership and the team.
  3. Evaluatesnew methodologies, reagents, and instrumentation.  Serves as a planning resources to the Supervisorand the Department.
  4. Actsas a technical resources and provides guidance for staff performing advancedimmunohematological workups.
  5. Possessesadvanced knowledge, skills and theory to perform job duties in the clinicallaboratory.  Establishes or verifies testperformance specifications.  Is able toassist others in learning techniques and theory.  Develops training and teaching programs forarea(s) of oversight.
  6. Hasprimary oversight and evaluation responsibility for quality control andinstrument function checks using established quality control practices toassess the functioning of the test system(s). Identifies when a QC problem exists and is able to troubleshoot andresolve issues in a timely manner.  Isable to establish a quality control program, execute this plan withinregulatory requirements and monitor test performance.  Can clearly communicate the steps taken tocorrect issues and help others understand the process.
  7. Operatesand maintains laboratory equipment according to established laboratory proceduresand/or manufacturers recommendations, including maintaining supplies.  Identifies when sample, instrument, and/orprocedural problems exists and takes appropriate actions to remedy the issue,prevent reoccurrence, and investigate replacement solutions or methods whennecessary.
  8. Isable to appropriately troubleshoot problems and communicate resolutions or nextsteps.
  9. Orientsand trains new laboratory staff.  Trainsbench personnel when new procedures or systems are put into routine use.  Trains MLS or MLT/CLT students in benchprocedures, basic theory, and advanced skills. Develops teaching and training tools and identifies training needs fornew students and employees as well as existing team members.  Develops competency tools and assesses competencyof the lab staff for waived, moderate and high complexity testing.
  10. Activelyparticipates in the D-HH member’s laboratory’s continuing education program.
  11. Assistin outpatient/in-patient phlebotomies, specimen processing, non-patientregistration, and requisition checks, as needed.  Must demonstrate the knowledge and skillsnecessary to determine phlebotomy technique appropriate for the age andcondition of the patient.  Has oversightof the phlebotomy team, sample collection and processing in the absence of thesupervisor or manager.
  12. Demonstratesknowledge of and acts in accordance with all hospital safety requirements.
  13. Performsother duties as required or assigned.

MinimumQualifications:

  • Bachelorsof Science Degree or the equivalent in education & Clinical Laboratoryexperience.
  • 3 – 5years lab experience required.
  • Abilityto work independently and adhere to deadlines and manage changing volumes.  Basic knowledge of computer software systems.

RequiredLicensure/Certification Skills:

  • Nationallyrecognized certification required within 1 year of date of hire.
  • ASCPpreferred.
  • CurrentBLS certification required within 30 days of hire for those CLS employeeslocated at Community Group Practice laboratory locations.
