VP of Medicinal Chemistry

Job Description:

Company is a clinical-stage precision oncology company with a pipeline of internally discovered investigational drugs designed to address key limitations of existing cancer therapies. The company’s lead program, repotrectinib, is a next-generation kinase inhibitor targeting genetic drivers of non-small cell lung cancer and advanced solid tumors. Company is driven to develop therapies that mark a turning point for patients in their cancer treatment.

Company is seeking a highly motivated and experienced leader for heading our medicinal chemistry efforts. This position is reported directly to CSO and is responsible for our overall medicinal chemistry strategies and approaches for small molecule drug discovery programs.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to initiate and lead cutting edge small molecule drug discovery programs at Company
  • Develop and execute research and medicinal chemistry strategies and approaches for fast progression of small molecule drug discovery projects
  • Ensure robust, cost-effective support of company discovery and development portfolio
  • Support the CSO in planning research and discovery activities including internal and external projects
  • Develop accurate budget and staff projections to support multidisciplinary team goals
  • Recruit high-quality chemistry personnel to support chemistry plan
  • Evaluate and select CROs and CMOs to support key preclinical chemistry activities
  • Oversee both internal chemistry team and external preclinical chemistry resources
  • Providing strong support and guidance to Turning Point’s intellectual property strategy and portfolios 


  • PhD in organic/medicinal chemistry
  • Small molecule oncology experience required
  • 15-20 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry with preclinical and clinical development activities
  • Broad knowledge in current synthetic methodology, ligand design as well as protein structure-based drug design, use of stereoelectronic interactions
  • Strong familiarity with physicochemical properties as they relate to drug design/development and application of ligand efficiency (LE) and lipid ligand efficiency (LLE) principles to design
  • Deep knowledge in drug discovery and development including the progression of compounds through the discovery cycle into pre-clinical and clinical development
  • Demonstrated a strong track record of success in advancing compounds to clinical candidate selection and beyond
  • Comprehensive medicinal chemistry knowledge from designing and identifying hits to clinical candidate selection
  • Thorough understanding of PK-ADME principles
  • Fast pace, attention to detail, and a passion for delivering important new therapies to patients with unmet medical needs
  • Outstanding scientific leadership, collaboration, and management skills
  • Proven track record of sustained high performance and innovative project contributions, including patents, presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications
  • Effective communication of hypotheses, SAR analysis, and structural designs/docking experiments using graphics tools and interactive sessions
  • Able to engage and influence senior leadership in strategic discussions.
  • Experience in young rapidly growing biotech companies
